APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY: Sustainable sipping — plastic straw usage down by over 400K straws in Appalachian Community

Appalachian State University issued the following announcement on May 22.

How many straws did Appalachian State divert from landfills in 2018-19? Almost 60 miles of straws laid end to end. For reference, that's roughly the distance between Boone and Asheville, as the crow flies.

In fall 2018, Food Services replaced the plastic straws offered by the university’s nonfranchise dining units with paper and corn plastic straws that are commercially compostable.
